Websters paperbacks take advantage of the fact that classics are frequently assigned readings in English courses. By using a running English-to-French thesaurus at the bottom of each page, this edition of The Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie was edited for three audiences. The first includes French-speaking students enrolled in an English Language Program (ELP), an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program, an English as a Second Language Program (ESL), or in a TOEFL or TOEIC preparation program. The second audience includes English-speaking students enrolled in bilingual education programs or French speakers enrolled in English-speaking schools. IT was 2 p.m. on the afternoon of May 7, 1915. The Lusitania had been struck by two torpedoes in succession and was sinking rapidly, while the boats were being launched with all possible speed. The women and children were being lined up awaiting their turn. Some still clung desperately to husbands and fathers; others clutched their children closely to their breasts. One girl stood alone, slightly apart from the rest. She was quite young, not more than eighteen. She did not seem afraid, and her grave, steadfast eyes looked straight ahead. "I beg your pardon." A man's voice beside her made her start and turn. She had noticed the speaker more than once amongst the first-class passengers. There had been a hint of mystery about him which had appealed to her imagination. He spoke to no one. If anyone spoke to him he was quick to rebuff the overture. Also he had a nervous way of looking over his shoulder with a swift, suspicious glance. She noticed now that he was greatly agitated. There were beads of perspiration on his brow. He was evidently in a state of overmastering fear. And yet he did not strike her as the kind of man who would be afraid to meet death! "Yes?" Her grave eyes met his inquiringly.

Just after World War One, Tommy Beresford and Tuppence Cowley are desperately short of money. With jobs thin on the ground they decide to form a partnership, hiring themselves out as ?young adventurers, willing to do anything, go anywhere?. In their first dangerous assignment, they must use all their ingenuity to save not only their lives but also the life of the mysterious ?Jane?. Christie was inspired to write The Secret Adversary after overhearing a conversation in a cafe. Two women were discussing a lady called Jane Fish, which struck Christie as a most ?entertaining? name, and she soon began work on a new novel. Originally titled The Joyful Venture, the name changed to The Young Adventurers before finally becoming The Secret Adversary. The woman's name that inspired Christie would change from Jane Fish, to Jane Finn. It was the second novel Christie wrote and the first to star Tommy and Tuppence. Published in 1922, it became the first novel to be made into a film; Fox Film in Germany adapted it under the title ?Die Abenteuer G.m.b.H. It was adapted in the UK in 1985 and starred Francesca Annis and James Warwick as Tommy and Tuppence. It was later shown in the USA on PBS.

Dr. Watson anxious to learn what became of The Sovereign Order of Monte Cristo and the heirs it was established to protect asked Sherlock Holmes, "So, what became of The Count of Monte Cristo's daughters we last heard of in the antebellum South?""Do you want me to skip right past the Civil War and into this present time?" Holmes replied."Not entirely, but for now yes, can you please continue the story presently, I was just wandering since you jumped into the local Styles case in more modern time not involving Monte Cristo.""Very well then, let me give you the connection between Styles and The Secret Adversary adventure also involving my dear student Agatha Christe. In this story, I will disguise Agatha as Tuppence, Monte Cristo's granddaughter as Jane Finn and myself as Mr. Carter.""You mean to say that one of Monte Cristo's granddaughters has a connection to Agatha Christe, your protg and that you are involved with The Order in today's world?""Yes, my dear Doctor, you will now learn that The Order is ever at work, and not only I am involved but The Count himself appears disguised in the story as a different 'count' from America.""May I know which granddaughter, that of Mercedes or Haydee?""The fact that she speaks French may give it away for you, but let me not give too much away now so that you will more thoroughly enjoy this wonderfully true, mysterious adventure.

Fans of British Mysteries are in for a treat with Volume 4 of British Mystery Megapacks. Our biggest selection yet! Fourteen books from maestros of mysteriesAgatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, Sax Rohmer, Kate Chopin and A. E. W. Mason. THE SECRET ADVERSARY by Agatha Christie Jobless and penniless, Thomas Beresford and Prudence "Tuppence" Cowley place an ad in the paper marketing themselves as adventurers, leading to an encounter that starts their career as spies for an unnamed British intelligence agency. The Tommy and Tuppence books are: 'The Secret Adversary' (1922); 'Partners in Crime' (short story collection) (1929); 'N or M?' (1941); 'By the Pricking of My Thumbs' (1968); 'Postern of Fate' (1973) Tales of Chinatown by Sax Rohmer All ten stories are presented here: THE DAUGHTER OF HUANG CHOW KERRY'S KID THE PIGTAIL OF HI WING HO THE HOUSE OF GOLDEN JOSS MAN WITH THE SHAVEN SKULL THE WHITE HAT TCHERIAPIN THE DANCE OF THE VEILS THE HAND OF THE MANDARIN QUONG THE KEY OF THE TEMPLE OF HEAVEN At the Villa Rose by A. E. W. Mason A heinous crime has been committed at the Villa Rose in Aix-les-Bains, France. A wealthy woman has been savagely murdered and the young Englishwoman who was her companion has disappeared. Authorities suspect that the Englishwoman played a role in the crime, but her fiancé, Harry Wethermill, hired a private French detective, Hanaud, to take on the case in an attempt to prove her innocence. “A real page turner - One of the best 'fair play' detective novels of all time.” An Egyptian Cigarette by Kate Chopin This short but haunting short story is included as a divertissement. It is a superb example of fin de siecle despair and a favorite of mystery anthologies. A Study In Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle “I have the advantage of knowing your habits, my dear Watson,” said he. “When your round is a short one you walk, and when it is a long one you use a hansom. As I perceive that your boots, although used, are by no means dirty, I cannot doubt that you are at present busy enough to justify the hansom.” “Excellent!” I cried. “Elementary,” said he. It all started here. A Study In Scarlet, 1887. The first story introducing Sherlock Holmes to the world. Dr. Watson, a military surgeon lately returned from the Afghan War, needs a flat-mate and a diversion. Holmes needs a foil. And thus a great literary collaboration begins. Watson and Holmes move to a now-famous address, 221B Baker Street, where Watson is introduced to Holmes's eccentricities as well as his uncanny ability to deduce information about his fellow beings. Somewhat shaken by Holmes's egotism, Watson is nonetheless dazzled by his seemingly magical ability to provide detailed information about a man glimpsed once under the streetlamp across the road. Then murder. Facing a deserted house, a twisted corpse with no wounds, a mysterious phrase drawn in blood on the wall, and the buffoons of Scotland Yard--Lestrade and Gregson--Holmes measures, observes, picks up a pinch of this and a pinch of that, and generally baffles his faithful Watson. Later, Holmes explains: "In solving a problem of this sort, the grand thing is to be able to reason backward.... There are few people who, if you told them a result, would be able to evolve from their own inner consciousness what the steps were which led up to that result." Holmes is in that elite group.
